"On a bend in the River Lee next to St Finbarre’s Cathedral, Elizabeth Fort has only just opened up to visitors. From 1601 to 2013, this building had a variety of roles and was first built to reinforce Cork’s city walls against the new threat of artillery. The fort was beefed up by Cromwell in 1649, and in 1690 the Jacobite defenders came under siege by the Williamites (fighting for the Dutch protestant prince William of Orange)."
"Many people that I chat with that are planning to visit Cork tend to miss out on Elizabeth Fort for some reason. Elizabeth Fort is a 17th-century star fort in Cork City that was built to act as a defensive fortification outside of the city walls. Over time, as the city expanded, it started to grow around the fort, making it redundant."
"UCC is arguably one of the most popular places to visit in Cork City, and you don’t need to be a student to explore the grounds. University College Cork was founded in 1845 and opened 4 years later in 1849 with 23 professors and 181 students. One of the reasons a visit to this place tends to be regarded by many as one of the best things to do in Cork City is that it’s home to loads of things to see and do."
"Founded in 1845, the University of Cork is ranked as one of the top places of higher education in Ireland, winning Irish University of the year in 2017. You can take a look around the university campus every day of the week, and on Saturday afternoons. There’s a visitor centre pointing out the worthwhile things to see and organising tours."
"Barryscourt Castle is an impressive historic castle that is located in County Cork, in the scenic town of Carrigtwohill. The grounds in which the castle is built has been inhabited for well over a thousand years; however, the first modern fortification is thought to have been built in the 12th century, after it was given to the de Barry family. The castle has changed shape over the years, having been rebuilt and renovated on several different occasions; the castle that stands today dates back mainly to the 16th century, and it is built in a traditional medieval architectural style."
"One of Cork’s most stunning castles, Barryscourt’s grounds are equally impressive. The garden offers a beautiful replica of a medieval garden, laid out in the same fashion as Tower House Gardens would have been in its prime, with an orchard of native fruit trees and an authentic 16th-century herb garden. This is an atmospheric place to spend an afternoon, so consider packing a picnic and making a day of it."
"Please Note: Barryscourt Castle is closed for maintenance and engineering work 2015/2016. Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family. The present castle, with its largely intact bawn wall and corner towers, is a fine example of an Irish tower house in which many defensive features such as a murder hole, crenulations, and stumble steps can be […]"
"We are extremely lucky in Mallow to not have one castle but two, the original was burned in the 1600's and a new more modern was built in the grounds just adjacent. The old castle ruins are still there and are a sight to behold, both castles can be viewed from outside while you amble in the gardens, take your picture with a dragon or frolic in the water font."
