"After going through a multimillion-euro upgrade, King John’s Castle is now one of the most modern castles in Ireland. With newly added interactive exhibitions, touch screen and CGI displays and a great new visitor centre, learning the history of a place has never been cooler. If you are travelling with your kids, the castle has projections that tell your kids more about the Norman Castles in the 13th century while you can listen to the in-depth archaeological facts about the place."

"An obdurate and brooding Norman mass over the River Shannon, Limerick's showpiece castle, with its vast curtain walls and towers, was built on the orders of King John of England between 1200 and 1212. The massive twin gate towers still stand to their full height. A multimedia experience that provides an excellent potted history of Ireland in general, and Limerick in particular, is followed by exposed archaeology in the undercroft and a tour of the courtyard and fortifications."

"After you’ve spent a good amount of time in the Art Gallery, it is probably time for you to take a rest in the People’s Park. This beautiful park was opened in the late 19th century and is where you will find most of the greenery in the city. Just to get away from the hustle and bustle of your trip, the park is great for spending a little time relaxing and just taking a break."

15 Best Things to Do in Limerick (Ireland
"In Newtown Pery, the People’s Park was imagined in the first decades of the 19th century as a grand Georgian place in the vein of Mountjoy Square in Dublin. But the development was curtailed by the Great Famine, and only one terrace of flat-fronted mansions was completed. The park was opened in 1877 and is the main parcel of greenery in the centre of the city."

"Go southwest of Limerick on the N69 and after a brief drive you’ll come to an idyllic former noble estate, now a 313-hectare public park. On a smooth ridge beside a man-made lake is the shell of Curraghchase House, going back to the mid-17th century and gutted by fire in 1941. The highly-regarded poet and critic Aubrey Thomas de Vere was born here, while his close friend Alfred, Lord Tennyson would often visit and wrote his work Lady Clara de Vere in homage."

The Most Beautiful Buildings in Limerick, Ireland
"An old structure on Limerick’s riverside originally designed to do exactly what it sounds like it should (collect tolls), what makes The Toll House unique is the faux defensive structure attached to the otherwise normal (and tiny) building to give it a sense of grandeur. The house, on the end of a line of terraced structures on the river, and close to the castle, dates back to the 1840s and isn’t open to the public. However, the oddity of its placement and contrast with the surrounding neighbourhood make it well worth a stroll down the Shannon regardless."

Must-Visit Attractions in Limerick, Ireland
"An 1840s riverside structure that looks like a castle, the Toll House is a faux defensive structure and was designed simply to collect a payment from those travelling into the city on the river. It’s just a building, but one quirky and well located enough to be worth the stroll down the banks of the Shannon for a visit."
